Extract from Southampton University Viewpoint:
“The play is thus indeed a masterpiece, and the production at the Nuffield is in all respects worthy of it. Monica Dolan as Mary and Jessica Turner as Elizabeth give the brilliant central performances, but they are superbly supported by a cast of such consistent quality that it would be invidious to single out any individual character. The set and lighting designs, by Juliet Shillingford and David W. Kidd respectively, work powerfully together to reflect and enhance the atmosphere of the play. I particularly liked the strip odistorting mirror at the back of the set, which can be seen as symbolising the ongoing intrigue and self-delusion of the action, and the stunning coup de théâtre towards the end of the play as the stage was bathed in blood red light at the moment of Mary’s execution.”
